The Graduation Goggles

I am a fan of the TV Series, “How I Met Your Mother” and I casually re-watch it now and then.

In an episode, Robin talks about a particular ‘theory’ called the “The Graduation Goggles.”

She explained that it is the feeling you experience when you are about to part ways with someone or something detestable. All of a sudden, you think that it is not that bad and may even be admirable.

She added it is like graduating in high school when your bullies suddenly appear to be ‘not that bad,’ even if they made your high school life miserable. It’s because, on the back of your head, you will never see them again.

Have I Experienced The Graduation Goggles?

As I mentioned in my previous blog post, it has been very stressful during the past months.

I almost hated everything about my job. I don’t like what I am doing, I don’t like working with my supervisor, I don’t like going to the office, and I don’t even like the chair I’ve been sitting on.

During the past month, I’ve submitted dozens of resumes to different companies to get out of the hole I am in.

But as they started calling one by one, I suddenly felt lighter. The job I hated now seems enjoyable. My supervisor suddenly started to sound funny (not because of his Indian accent). Going to the office is no longer a chore. Even my chair felt like brand new.

I don’t know, so I am going to wait and see what happens next. It may be that I have a deep-seated fear of the unknown or fear of rejection, so my mind subconsciously decided to stick with the familiar.

I know that over-familiarity is not good for our growth, so I decided to set a deadline. If my current situation doesn’t change or worsen in the next six months, I will not hesitate to pass that piece of paper.
